Apple Still Working to Allow iPhone to Wirelessly Charge AirPods and Other Devices

According to a recent claim from 9to5Mac that cites insiders with knowledge of Apple's plans, the company is still working on a reverse wireless charging feature that would enable the iPhone to charge other devices like the AirPods.

For a future iPhone, Apple is reportedly developing "advanced bilateral wireless charging technology." The feature wasn't "finalized in time" for the business to include it in the iPhone 14 Pro versions as originally planned.

Although it's unclear exactly what that means, the website claims that Apple is developing a "wireless power out" firmware that will serve as the foundation for the two-way wireless charging feature. This firmware is also reportedly a "key aspect of the ongoing testing and engineering" of reverse wireless charging.

Apple needs to improve factors like charging efficiency, heat dissipation, and charging speed before introducing a feature that would let the iPhone charge other devices. Similar to the interface used for MagSafe accessories, Apple is creating a "specific user interface" for bilateral wireless charging.

Over the past few years, there have been numerous reports of reverse wireless charging (also known as bidirectional wireless charging). Prior to the release of the gadget, bilateral wireless charging was predicted to be a feature of the iPhone 11, but it was not included. Later rumors claimed that Apple had dropped the feature since the charging efficiency did not meet Apple's standards at the time.

With the release of the MagSafe Battery Pack in 2021, Apple provided a sort of working example of reverse wireless charging, which was alluded to in an FCC filing for the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12.

The MagSafe Battery Pack, which is magnetically fastened to an iPhone, enables passthrough charging when the iPhone is connected to a Lightning cable. In the future, charging for AirPods and other gadgets might function similarly, attaching to the iPhone's back and charging concurrently with the iPhone. Since several years ago, Samsung, an Apple rival, has offered a reverse wireless charging feature that enables a Samsung smartphone to charge any Qi-based device, including another smartphone.

Reverse wireless charging may be postponed once more or abandoned entirely, according to 9to5Mac, thus it is impossible to predict when the feature will be available. Reverse wireless charging hasn't been mentioned yet by trustworthy sources like Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, so it's possible that it won't be available in 2023 at the same time as the iPhone 15 lineup.
