Hands on: Samsung Galaxy S23 review – smaller, cleaner and more powerful

The widely anticipated Samsung Galaxy S23 is now available, and it largely confirms all of the information that has been leaked about it.


The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus both lost the contour, as was to be expected. The elevated piece of metal that surrounded the camera array has been removed from Samsung's newest smartphone line, the S23 series. This 6.1-inch phone and its larger 6.6-inch brother appear much more like the rest of the smartphone pack thanks to a sleeker design. The Samsung Galaxy S23's story, however, is more about what is inside of it than how it looks now. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy is present in all three of Samsung's latest flagship devices.

It's a cool term that describes one unique feature of these Android 13 phones: all of the mobile CPUs have been overclocked to 3.36 GHz, which may be an industry-leading speed. Do you really need so much power in a smartphone, especially when Qualcomm and Apple mobile CPUs from the current and prior generations already give more power than the majority of phones can utilize? It's likely that the added power will improve 8K 30 fps capture, make games run more smoothly, and enhance CPU-intensive tasks like 8K video editing.

There wasn't enough time during my brief hands-on to test or benchmark that performance. The Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and the daring Galaxy S23 Ultra are all part of the Samsung Galaxy S23 portfolio, however the Galaxy S23 is the flagship model.

Instead of downsizing the outstanding camera array from the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which includes a 108MP sensor, to the new Galaxy S23 line while upgrading the S23 Ultra to a 200MP sensor, Samsung chose to essentially preserve the S23 camera array. It still has a 50MP wide-angle, 12MP ultrawide-angle, and 10MP 3X optical zoom camera. The front camera has been upgraded from 10MP to 12MP. Better photography, according to Samsung, is mostly a result of the improved CPU's and its more potent AI functions.

Even though it was far from a scientific test, I was pleased with the camera's performance.


Samsung didn't make much changes to the 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O FHD+ display, much like they didn't. There is still a punch-hole for the selfie camera towards the top, an ultrasonic fingerprint reader underneath, and a configurable refresh rate between 48Hz and 120Hz.


In most important respects, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is identical to the larger Galaxy S23 Plus. But there are some significant variations.

Although Samsung essentially left the proportions of the Galaxy S22 unchanged, the Galaxy S23 is actually smaller than the S23 Plus.


The Samsung-tuned Qualcomm chip is located inside the gorgeous Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (brushed back, glossy front), which also has an Armor Aluminum chassis. However, the battery and base storage are just half as large (at 128GB initially). The 3,900 mAh battery is at least 200 mAh bigger than the Galaxy S22's. The Plus' enhanced cooling system and UWB (ultra-wideband) features are also absent from the S23.
