iPhone 16 rumored to introduce a new “Capture Button” with unknown purpose

A brand-new Action button has replaced the mute switch on the recently released iPhone 15 Pro. According to a recent rumor, Apple intends to keep including buttons on new iPhone models.

Someone connected to a rather well-known leaks account from the iPhone 15 rumor cycle posted the news on MacRumors. They stress that the pre-production information is where the new specifics come from and that there are separate plans for an iPhone 16 without the button.

A capacitive touch button would be placed underneath the sleep/wake button on all four iPhone 16 versions, the report claims. The button is known as Project Nova under the codename Capture Button.

The study provides no information regarding the Capture Button's potential functions. The mmWave panel will be relocated to the side below the volume controls, they add.

They also suggest the return of the stacked orientation for the cameras on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. This could be helpful for recording spatial video, which is still being added to the iPhone 15 Pro.

Why is this rumor spreading? One year after introducing the Action button on its Pro models, will Apple introduce a new button on all four phones? Could the capacitive button resemble Google's squeeze button for Active Edge?

The location would correspond with Apple's now-discontinued iPhone 11 Smart Battery Case, which had a dedicated camera button. The mute switch was sacrificed so that the Action button could duplicate that capability. With a shutter button, the bottom right side is likewise a better placement than the upper left.

On the Apple Vision Pro, there is also a special button for taking spatial images and films. Could this be an effort to encourage the development of more spatial material for Vision Pro?

This rumor now needs some more time to develop because the functionality is unknown. You can view the entire study here and make your own judgments.
